He was born on 4th july in 1922 at his maternal house at Kalighat. He was the 4th child of his mother late Saraju Devi and his father late Pandit Bireswar Goswami. His family is known as famous 'Simuliya Goswami Parivaar',direct descendent of 'Sri Sri Nityananda Mahaprabhu'.

Pandit Balai Chand Goswami, Grand father, was renowned Sanskrit pandit and Writer of so many religious books-and explainer of 'Srimat Bhagbat Geeta', Upnishad. Pandit Bireswar was also involved himself in Sanskrit literature.

Pandit Balai Chand was friend, dearest one and co-operator of 'Kavi guru Rabindranath Thakur'. Born in such an auspicious religious and cultural family-Gour was influenced in Prem and Bhakti of Vaishnaba cult.

His appearance was so charming that his Grand mother lt. Raj Rajeswari Devi, named him 'Gour Chand', of course, in childhood his name in school and college was 'Chandramadhav'
Shimulya-was at the that time includes some area of north-east Kolkata, his residence was therefore at 71/c W.C. Banerjee Street,Kol-6 (formerly Balaram Dey street).

He was born in musical family apart from literary atmosphere- elder brother Lt. Brojeswar Goswami was music director and famous 'Veenakaar', elder sister Annapurna was vocalist and Gold medalist singer in A.I.R.

His next sister Shefali-was lyricist and writer in Bengali literature. All his other sisters-Lilly,Bela,Meera were singers and brother Lt.Joydev Goswami was tabla and guitar player of A.I.R. Pandit Ji`s first sangeet guru was his elder brother-Brojeswar-who gave him the first lesson and talim in flute. gradually, when he was on his way of development in recitation of his instrument then he was sent to famous `Bansuri badak` Pandit Pannalal Ghosh. He was a trainee under pandit Pannnalal ghosh for several years then he learnt Indian Classical Music from Pt. Shiv Kumar Chatterjee, Pt. Ramnath Mishra, Ustad Mustan Gama, Pt. T.L. Raha, Pt. Suresh Chokroborty. During this course of time he had got enormous knowledge in his fields of music from those stall worth. He was M.mus- from Allahabad 'Prayag Sangeet Samaj'.

Every year his flute recital was highly applaused in Tansen Music Conference. Sadarang,-Almora Music Conference, Shurer Maya Sangeet Shamelan, Annual Music function of Ganguly College-of music and so on.

His Flute recital was always in `Gayaki` style from Mahiyar Gharana. He was the senior officer at All India Radio. He was attached there for 35years. His immortal Flute recital has been kept in archive of AIR. During his attachment with AIR. He composed songs in Rammagiti, and E-Masher Gaan, several Geeti Alekhya like Anarkali, Premer Shamadhi, Baijayanti etc. He worked as music director also in public stage. In Bidhayak Bhattacharya's drama "Raj-Rappa" staged at Rangmahal his music composition was at that time highly appreciated by the critics and public.

He worked as music director in several Bengali, Hindi, Orissa, Assomiya films. He composed the Indian music section in the Oscar award winning film ‘The River’(directed by J.Renowa).

A remarkable point needs to be added in this biography that he left his sincere effort for the renowned program "Mohishashur Mordini" a great successes of AIR. Lt. Birendra Krishna Bhadra and Lt. Pankaj Kumar Mullick took his wide help during recording session of this program. There is a quotation of Lt. Pankaj Kumar Mullick "Without Gour I don't think the recording of music portion would be successful of this programme". His music balancing and arrangement and Endeavour were always with them. But alas his name not once has been mantioned by the A.I.R. staffs or the living participants of that programme.
He has got so many students from India and abroad. We would like to share couple of names of his disciples viz Sri Deboprosad Banerjee, Bishu Roy, Gopal Roy, Himangshuu Biswas, Aloknath Dev, Nikhilesh Roy (The father of Violin Brothers) in Bengal and Mr. Steve Gorn (America), P.R.Parera(Srilanka), Ching Thug(China), Mr. Duro(South Africa, ) Miss Saran(Great Britain) are mentionable.

At the end of 60's HMV released his L.P. record of his flute recital where he played Raga Bageshree in one side and Nat Bhairav on other side, accompanied in Tabla by 'Ustad Afaque Hussain.
