Title : Manassas - 1972 Atlanta
Description : Manassas
Atlanta, GA, May 15, 1972.

From the comments made onstage, it's likely this concert took place right after the release of their self-titled debut album. Not surprisingly, about half the songs performed here are from that album.

Unlike the more populist Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Manassas sound like a musician's band. While fronted by Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield) and Chris Hillman (Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers), the group plays a whole range of music and they aren't afraid to jam or stretch out. It Doesn't Matter comes across as a tune that America could have written; Somebody is bluesy as hell and Go Back Home might have started off with a funky intro but the listener will soon be hit by some heavy guitar work.

And when the second set starts, it's the bluegrassy Fallen Eagle that tickles your fancy followed by some weepy, sliding guitar on Hide It So Deep, rounded up by some good ol' country on You're Still On My Mind. And the band was already giving props to Cuban music long before Ry Cooder discovered the Buena Vista Social Club.

Live, the group cuts a mighty fine groove, as on The Treasure and Carry On. While Manassas come across as a group of consummate musicians, perfectly able to switch musical genres at will, unfortunately there aren't any songs that really stick in your mind. Who knows what might have happened if the group has some strong singles or chart success. Manassas disbanded in September 1973.
